Whitewashing brick or stone fireplace wall?

Yes, we can! in fact in Sterling Virginia, Maryland, and even in Washington D.C.

whitewashing brick fireplaces, stone walls, and, brick exteriors are quickly becoming popular. It’s a great way to update that old red brick fireplace. Whitewashing stone walls is something that can make a dramatic change to your room. Whether it’s a stone fireplace, brick accent wall, or even your whole exterior using a whitewashing technique can make a change that will surprise you.

In this stone wall, you can see how the contrasting colors stand out and what we wanted to do is to pull the tones together. Whitewashing the stone wall pushes back the darker tones and unifies the area for a more subtle modern contemporary look.

We start off of course by prepping and protecting the room because of the possibility of dripping the rather thin mixture that we use to blend the whitewash into the stone wall. We are pros at this so you can be sure we take care of all the protection needed to make the transformation as smooth as possible.

The transformation is stunning to say the least. Using an off-white tinted just right to pull all the stone’s various colors together is critical to this technique. If the color is too “cool” it will appear chalky and if it’s too “warm” then it could look too muddy.

It’s really amazing what a whitewash can do for a stone fireplace!

20 years ago this kind of look was popular in the Virginia and Maryland area, I mean even in Washington DC it was common not only in older homes but there were a lot of new homes it was installed in. But with today’s popularity with cleaner and more modern contemporary designs whitewashing stone and brick fireplaces has been a great way to update a home’s interior instead of going through the expense of having it removed.

Before you think about removing the stone or brick there are a few things you should take into consideration. Looking closely at what the brick or stone covers could make the decision for you when you think of all the work that will need to be done once all of the stone is removed.

Drywall repairs, and floor replacements in case there is a hearth like the above could get very costly, but if instead, you were to just whitewash the fireplace or wall you would be saving not only a ton of money but also the aggravation of half of the dozen trades tramping through your home for the next 4 to 6 weeks.

Whitewashing a fireplace can be done in less time…

than it takes to do a complete overhaul of the area. Contractors can give you a close ballpark of what it could cost but even then they can’t promise you an exact number because it’s hard to determine what could be behind that wall once the brick or stone is removed.

Why would you whitewash a stone fireplace?

I think the image above answers that question. I mean what better solution could you think of that would change the look of your room than having a professional like Mr. Faux (Chris Burke) and his artisans come in and transform the stone or brick fireplace, wall, kitchen island, or even your outdoor kitchen area into a look like what you see here.

Oh did I mention kitchens? Yes, we can transform your kitchen cabinetry for 1/3rd of the cost of refacing too!

Tired of that old red brick fireplace?

Yeah, I am too! I mean there was a time and a place for it but today whitewashing the brick fireplace can make such a huge impact on a room that your friends and neighbors will think that you redesigned or even remodeled the room. The reason is that a stone wall or brick fireplace is usually a key focal point when entering a room, it’s the first thing that catches your eye, or at least it does mine

WOW, what a nice change!

This is only one reaction you will hear once you see your whitewashed fireplace. Who would have thought that this would make that much of a difference?

But that’s not all we do!

I think what would be a nice addition to this room’s interior would be a little Venetian Plaster. We also specialize in the application of the finest imported Italian Plasters and many other faux finishes. Just think with all that you have saved from not tearing out that old brick or stone wall you could put that into painting those old dated oak cabinets in your kitchen, library, or maybe that bathroom vanity that’s been needing a change.

Something to think about…

We have a lot more work to show in the Faux Finishing Gallery, stop in and take a look

Large or small a professionally executed whitewash can look great!

Whitewash is an age-old technique that goes back as far as 3000 B.C. The origin is said to be Mesopotamia which was made in a variety of ways that involved milk or lime. Sometimes it was made from eggs but during the 19th century it was used during the Colonial Period and quite common I think it’s nice that it is coming back again.

Whitewashing a fireplace really makes a room come alive!

This is a style that will always be around or at least from my 35 years in the painting and decorative arts business I have whitewashed brick fireplaces, stone walls, and even outdoor kitchen areas. No matter where the stone is it can be enhanced and brought to life with a whitewashing technique.
